Method #1: Use Grease on Latch

  • To begin with, open your car door and close it firmly to make sure it’s properly attached. If it’s not, you’ll see a warning light on the dashboard that says the door is not closed properly.
  • After that, you’ll need to use some grease, like brake cleaner or white lithium grease, in the latch hole. According to someone on F150 Online, you can also use WD-40 as an alternative to fix the stuck latch issue.
  • Next, open and close the door a few times to fix the stuck latch problem.
  • Then, start the car and watch the door-ajar light. If it stays on, spray more grease and keep opening and closing the door until the light goes off.

Note: You can try using the grease on the latch hole for a short time solution. Keep in mind that the door ajar light will pop often on the dashboard after a few days.

Method #2: Change the Door Ajar Switch or Sensor

To change the door ajar switch, you only need to locate it and do a few steps. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Firstly, take off the door panel on the driver’s or passenger’s side door (based on which door is ajar).
  • Then, detach the latch and lock lever along with other gears that hide the latch.
  • After that, disconnect all the wires and parts.
  • Lastly, replace the door ajar switch that is attached under the latch (small L-shaped part).

Note: To know the process in detail, here’s a guide that explains how you can change the door ajar switch.

If changing the switch doesn’t stop the door ajar warning light from turning off, you’ll need to remove and install a new door-ajar sensor.

To do that, you’ll need to take off the door latch or courtesy switch piece on the car’s door frame. Then, remove the black tube and pull out the door-ajar sensor from it.

If it seems okay but contains rust, be sure to clean it by following this guide that shows how you can fix the door ajar sensor issue.

Method #3: Replace the Door

  • To start with, identify and remove the screws that secure the door in place. You can do that by locating the two 10mm screws at both the top and bottom of the door. Use a 10mm socket wrench to carefully detach them to loosen the door.

  • After that, disconnect the switch from the plastic parts to ensure a smooth removal process.
  • Then, carefully lift the door off its hinges.
